Celebrating the Colors of Peace in Western Canada

UPF-Canada Expands Its Interreligious Focus
Toronto, Canada - The ongoing civil strife in Sri Lanka has spilled over into the Sri Lankan community in Canada. In the Toronto area, UPF is reaching out to the Sinhalese and Tamil Sri Lankans of various faiths to narrow the communications gap and help establish common understandings among them, in the hopes that this can have a positive influence on developments in their home country.
UPF Picnic in Ontario, Canada
Clearstone, Canada - It is customary for UPF Central District (Toronto) to arrange a family picnic for its members and guests at Clearstone Lodge; Roseneath R2, Ontario, at least once in a year. This time it was different because I have been waiting to attend the occasion with full UPF spirit and fervor. This auspicious occasion was arranged by the joint efforts of Dr. Chae Hee Lee, Chairman of UPF-Canada, and Dr. Hoossen Auckbaraullee, Chairman of the Central District. Of course those who attended made it splendid by their presence.

Inter-Religious Family Festival in Toronto
As envisaged earlier by UPF-Canada's Central District, the much awaited Inter-Religious Family Festival was celebrated on March 15 with full fervor and zest, which has sown the seeds of unified action to establish peace within and around. People of different ethnic origins and religious groups gathered to share their common values to contribute towards peaceful co-existence and peace among them. The gathering looked like a unified family under one God. Catholics, Protestants, Assyrians, Muslims, Sikhs, and others could be seen intermingling and sharing their appreciation of each other.

In the early part of the twenty-first century, the peoples of the world are experiencing an intolerable level of insecurity and violence on the parts of states and non-state actors. At the same time, there has been a re-energizing of the peace movement and citizen initiatives in seeking innovative, nonviolent and enduring resolution of conflict through peacebuilding activities of many kinds. One of those initiatives is a growing international movement for the creation of departments of peace in all nations. Canada, as a middle power with a long history of peacekeeping and negotiated outcomes to conflict, stands in a unique position to become the first country to proclaim a Department and Minister of Peace.
