I strongly feel that the time has come for greater cohesion among our nations for building a more peaceful and developed world and for the UN agencies in the region to play a pivotal role in this regard.
Gangtok and Chennai, India - Observances of the UN Global Day of Parents took place in Gangtok, Sikkim on June 1, 2014 and in Chennai on June 6.
Chennai, India - An International Day of Families program took place at the YWCA in Chennai on May 15, 2014 with 80 people in attendance.
New Delhi, India - A half-day seminar on March 5 inaugurated a College Peace Club at Miranda House College and marked International Women's Day 2014.
Four UN World Interfaith Harmony Week 2014 programs were held throughout India. They addressed the role religions should collectively play in peacebuilding. Two seminars were held at the UN Conference Hall in the capital, New Delhi. Other programs were in Siliguri, West Bengal, and in the southern city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. UPF-India was the main organizer of these events.
New Delhi, India - An overflow crowd gathered at the United Nations Information Centre in New Delhi, India on Jan. 4, 2014 for an event linked to the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week.
New Delhi, India - Dr. Thomas G. Walsh, President of the Universal Peace Federation, was invited to speak at the Global Citizen Forum in New Delhi on Jan. 3, 2014. The forum on the theme of "One World: The Role of India, China, and the USA," was organized by the Spice Group's Chairman, Dr. B.K. Modi, an Indian businessman and philanthropist.
New Delhi, India - St. Stephen's College of the University of Delhi hosted a Religious Youth Service project Dec. 16-22, 2013, that included renovating a shelter for children in the slums.
Civil society is missing its religious partner, which is a major facet of human experience and expression. Interfaith bodies like the Universal Peace Federation have been calling for institutionalizing this partnership. I agree. I am sure that if an interfaith council were established at the UN, Hindus and for that matter people of all religions would welcome it. It is a long-standing need.
UPF-India held four events commemorating the International Day of Peace 2013, starting in Malda, West Bengal on Sept. 17 and ending in the capital city of New Delhi on Sept. 27.
UPF-India organized celebrations of the UN International Day of Families in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in May 2013. Mr. Krishna Adhikari, Secretary General of UPF-India, gave talks on "The Family as the School of Love."
New Delhi and Lucknow, India - A student debate competition on the theme of "Religion and Modernity: Complementary or Contradictory?" marked World Interfaith Harmony Week at Ram Lal Anand College of the University of Delhi in New Delhi, India, on February 7. Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Mayor of Lucknow, and Mrs. Bharati Gandhi, founder of the largest Montessori school in the world, were featured speakers at a World Interfaith Harmony Week program in Lucknow.
New Delhi, India - UN representatives, journalists, government officials, student leaders, and NGO envoys, numbering nearly 50, attended a half-day program at the prestigious Civil Services Officers’ Institute in New Delihi on January 24. The theme was “India’s Perspective on Nepal’s Peace Process.”

New Delhi, India - To mark the UN International Day of Peace 2012 and the UN Sport for Development and Peace program, UPF-India joined hands with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan and St. Stephens College to organize an Intercollegiate Peace Football Tournament under the theme “Play Soccer, Make Peace” from October 10-12 at the football field of St. Stephens College, North Campus, University of Delhi. Eight teams from eight different colleges under Delhi University took part in the tournament.
New Delhi, India - The Universal Peace Federation-India launched College Peace Clubs in three universities in New Delhi in August and September: Ram Lal Anand College and St. Stephen's College of the University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia (the Islamic National University).
New Delhi, India - A Peace Club was inaugurated at the Jamia Millia Islamia, India's national Islamic university, on September 24 as part of a commemoration of the International Day of Peace. Dr. Abid Hussain, the university's Program Officer of the National Service Scheme, delivered welcoming remarks.

Vrindavan, India - American TV personality Oprah Winfrey visited the Guild for Service's Shelter Home in Vrindavan in January 2012. On April 29 her OWN cable TV network will feature its shelter home and widows at 9:00 PM Eastern Time/Pacific Time.
