Day of Peace in Buenos Aires

Argentina-2008-09-21-Day of Peace in Buenos Aires

Español

Buenos Aires, Argentina - The Universal Peace Federation, Argentine Chapter, participated in the celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Peace 2008 with a symbolic ceremony of planting an olive tree in the “Parque Patricios” district of Buenos Aires on September 20. Mrs. Maria Costa Pinto, the UN Information Centre Director for Argentina and Uruguay; Miguel Werner, Secretary General of UPF-Argentina; Mr. Horacio Daboul, the President of the Social and Cultural Arabic League Association, together with representatives of other institutions participated in the celebration.

The ceremony of planting a small olive tree, a symbol of peace, victory, and strength, able to withstand the worst environmental conditions, was held in the framework of the culmination of the 106th anniversary celebration of the Parque Patricios Square and of the 202nd anniversary celebration of the creation of the 1st Infantry Guard Regiment, “Patricios.”

The traditional Guard Corps, created on September 15, 1806, has the mission to watch over the historical places of Argentina, such as the Cabildo, the Plaza de Mayo, the Government Palace in Buenos Aires, and the Monument to the National Flag in Rosario. This Regiment, together with representatives of other civil associations, closed the celebration of the day with a traditional parade along Caseros Avenue, one of the main avenues in Buenos Aires, gathering a lot of people in spite of the cold and cloudy weather.

On the occasion a flower presentation was made at the “Patricios Soldier Monument” in the middle of the traditional park. The tribute was paid by the institutions that organized the celebration, among them the Trade and Industry Chamber, the Huracan Athletic Club, the “San Antonio Sociedad de Fomento,” the “Corrales Viejos” Brotherhood, the Felix Bernasconi Institute, the Memorial Forum, and other district organizations.

At the end, we distributed the Declaration of Peace from the Universal Peace Federation to be commemorated on September 21, the International Day of Peace 2008, in the year that we celebrate 60th Anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration. In its five points the document encourages people to consider the “deep relevance and meaning” of the spiritual values embodied by the religious traditions and the effort to guarantee human rights. It also makes a call to strengthen marriage and the family and to create educational programs that can teach about “peace and conflict resolution,” helping people to accomplish their responsibility of “being respectful and living for the sake of others.” Finally, the document invites people to expand the consciousness of solidarity as a whole universal family and encourages the development of a culture of service that will contribute to the “building of a lasting peaceful world.”
