In connection with the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/66/292 issued on September 14, 2012, that established the Global Day of Parents to be celebrated in honor of all parents around the world on June 1, we, the participants of the conference "Towards the Global Day of Parents" in Moscow,
We express our support for the General Assembly Resolution and UN efforts in promoting worldwide family and moral values.
We recognize that the family is the basis for realizing lasting peace and harmony of civilizations, the primary and most important unit of society, and the tool for achieving reconciliation in the world. Nowadays, a wide range of socioeconomic, cultural, and political problems threaten the stability of families. The restoration of the two-parent family is the way to meet the social and public challenges that threaten our world.
We believe that the fundamental role of parents in educating children and strengthening the family institution is in need of comprehensive support on the part of the state and non-government organizations. Their partnership efforts would guarantee that the interests of the socially vulnerable groups – orphans, single-parent and low-income families – will be protected and provided for.
We state that since 1949, when the Congress of the International Democratic Women’s Federation declared June 1 to be the International Day for the Protection of Children, this date has been widely celebrated in many nations of the world, including Russia; also the UN International Day of Families, May 15, has likewise gained acceptance worldwide.
We suggest, in this regard, to annually celebrate the period of May 15 – June 1 as a two-week period honoring parents and children by giving it the status of an internationally recognized public campaign for defending traditional family values and strengthening the moral basis of modern society.
We call on the civil society institutions of Russia and other nations of the world to respond to our appeal and demonstrate in the second half of May 2013 a unanimous determination to advocate by joint efforts the interests of families, parents, and children in modern society.
