Day of Peace in Guyana

Georgetown, Guyana  - UPF-Guyana worked with the Scouts Association to sponsor a peace walk, rally, and prayers by representatives of different religions in Georgetown on the International Day of Peace 2008.

Acting President Samuel Hinds unveiled a peace pole at the Non-Aligned Monument engraved with the words "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in English, Spanish, French, and Dutch. Also present at the ceremony were the Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony; the Mayor of Georgetown, Hon. Hamilton Green; and members of other peace groups.

A peace march on the theme "Work to overcome barriers, build understanding, and promote reconciliation" followed the unveiling of the peace pole. The public officials and dozens of other Ambassadors for Peace marched along the Main Street of the nation's capital carrying signs promoting peace. The march ended at the bandstand of the Kingston Seawall. Another peace pole was erected at the Scouts, Association Headquarters, and more peace poles for other parts of the city and country.
