Day of Peace in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, China - The World Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) collaborated with the Centre of Development and Resources for Students at Hong Kong University in organizing peace events on the International Day of Peace, September 21. The objectives of the events were to stimulate students’ awareness about promoting world peace and encourage them to live for the sake of others. There were two components of the collaboration: the Peace Stickers Distribution Campaign and the Launch of Hong Kong University's International Day of Peace Commemoration. In addition, World CARP organized a Peace Tea Gathering.

Ms. Karen Wai, Ms. Sharon Lai, and Ms. Grace Lai led 12 World CARP members and some Collegiate Ambassadors for Peace in distributing peace stickers on the campus to remind students of the significance of the International Day of Peace, which is to promote world peace and spread a culture of peace and harmony.

The commemoration of the International Day of Peace took place at the university's Sun Yat-sen Plaza. The theme of the event was “Every One a Brick: Peace-building for Global Harmony!” Guests of honor spoke about “Peace-building in Today’s World”: Professor Chow Shew-Ping, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of University Relations at Hong Kong University, and Mr. Choosin Ngaotheppitak, Head of the Hong Kong and Macau Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The peace bell was rung, and one minute of silence was observed. A few students shared their experiences about peace-building. One student spoke about visiting the poor regions in Vietnam, and a student from Zimbabwe talked about her own country. World CARP members offered a song, “Where Peace Begins.”

At the Peace Tea Gathering, the Universal Peace Federation was introduced. The history and significance of the International Day of Peace was explained, and participants were encourage to dedicate themselves to living for the sake of others and make every day a peaceful day. The gathering ended with games about world peace.
