Lima, Peru - The UN International Day of Peace was celebrated in one of the rooms of the National Congress of Peru, in coordination with UPF-Peru. Similar meetings took place in the provincial capitals of Trujillo and Puno
Congressmen and religious leaders of various faiths participated in the event in Lima, along with a former Minister of Defense, representatives of the Lions Club, various government officials, and university and college students.
The room with a capacity of 250 was filled to overflowing, and many people were unable to enter.
Speeches about peace and the theme of the day were made by Congressman Yonhy Lescano; Dr. Luis Huarcaya, former government minister; Dr. Christian Pardo Reyes, President of an international youth organization; and Dr. Antero Flores Araoz, past President of Congress.
The President of UPF-Peru Ing. Jorge Chavez read the speech of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Rev. Trevor Jones read the message from UPF International.
There was an interreligious candle lighting ceremony and the appointment of five new Ambassadors for Peace. The meeting closed with a song of peace and the reading of two peace poems.
