Day of Peace Observed in Dublin

Dublin, Ireland - UPF-Ireland celebrated the UN International Day of Peace in the evening of September 23 at the Lantern Interfaith Centre, which is run by Br. Michael Murray, an Ambassador for Peace. He had his crew preparing the hall and several women were cooking in the kitchen. The event began with food and entertainment, since many of the guests would come directly from work and some had difficulties to get there in time.

Br. Michael had engaged a Russian woman who is working with talented children to prepare the spirit with some good entertainment. A young boy showed his skills on the saxophone, and a professional couple gave a fiery ballroom dance performance.

The more serious part of the evening started with the participants singing together a couple of verses from “This Is My Song,” and people from different backgrounds lit the peace candles.

The talk of the evening was given by Mr. Alan McCann. His topic was “From a culture of conflict to a culture of peace.” In Dublin other groups also had their peace day celebration, but few were really able to pinpoint the very reason why mankind is longing for peace, still is not able to find it. Mr. McCann took the listeners through what happens in the family and how this forms character and thinking for the rest of our life. He talked about how we all have to reach maturity and learn how important it is to be able to love our fellow in a more unconditional way and also forgive when that is asked of us.

Since there were people from so many different religions and nationalities present, there was an opportunity for group discussions on the topic of what to teach children to help them become people of peace. This gave a good chance to reflect on childhood experiences and how they influenced life choices. There were lively exchanges in the discussion groups. Representatives of the groups reported the conclusions of the discussions.

Mrs. Doris McCann, director of the Women's Federation for World Peace, introduced some of the work this organization is doing and invited the women to join in the different activities.
