Day of Peace Observed in Quito

Quito, Ecuador - UPF-Ecuador commemorated the International Day of Peace at the Hall of the National Union of Journalists in Quito on September 21. The theme of the event was Peace and Democracy.
The ceremony started with one minute of silence, followed by the solemn sound of the Presidential Escorts' Trumpets. The Masters of Ceremony were Ambassadors for Peace Lcda. Sonia Sampedro and Pastor Castúlo Leiton.
The video message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was projected onto a screen. The message of Mrs. Lucía Satamea-Palacios, Director of UN Women in Colombia and Ecuador, informed audience of the historical background and purpose of the International Day of Peace and the position of UN agencies and UN Women regarding the establishment of culture of peace. The reader of this message was Dr. Enrique Casares, Ambassador for Peace. Mr. Mario Leguisamo, a delegate of UN Volunteers in Ecuador, promoted the activities by volunteers in UN organizations.
The international work of UPF was explained as well as the mission of Ambassadors for Peace to promote living for the sake of others and a culture of peace. Mr. Eyal Sela, the Ambassador of Israel, set a high value on UPF's Middle East Peace Initiative and gave the blessing to all audience.
Dr. Galo Martinez Pinto, a delegate of the President of the National Court and a national judge, congratulated UPF for taking the initiative to celebrate the International Day of Peace and expressed his admiration for the vision of UPF and the mission of Ambassadors for Peace. Dr. Tania Masson Fiallos, a delegate of the President of the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control, mentioned the miserable situation of the world and appealed to the audience to participate in activities that spread a peace culture. Dr. Hernán Ulloa, a National Judge of the Supreme Court, called peace the greatest value to a society and emphasized the importance of justice in order to obtain peace.
Each participant on the stage expressed their personal point of view about peace and democracy. Special music was provided by the choir of the Provincial Government of Pichincha and the Govindas Cultural Center, a Hindu organization.
The audience included government officials, diplomats, educators, religious leaders, journalists, students, and Ambassadors for Peace. The event had the support of the Andean office of UN Women, the Provincial Federation of Journalists of Pichincha, the Association of Professional and Business Women, the Govindas Cultural Center, the Institute of Superior and Appropriate Technology, the Gorritas Azules Foundation, educational institutions, and representatives of religions.
All participants received a copy of the autobiography of UPF Founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
