Day of Peace Observed in Honiara

Honiara, Solomon Islands - UPF-Solomon Islands organized events at two schools in Honiara commemorating the UN International Day of Peace.

The first event, on September 22, was attended by about 300 students during the morning assembly at Vura Community High School from 8:00 to 8:30 am. The program included an explanation of the International Day of Peace, reading the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, observing One Minute of Silence, a quiz, and a song. The teachers and students enjoyed the program sponsored by the UPF-school visit team. At the end of the program, students were encouraged to participate in a peace message competition, and the winners will be announced during the first week of October.

The second event was held at New Hope Academy on September 24 with Alice Hou as MC. Pastor George Tafoa offered the opening prayer, followed by remarks by Chihiro Midorikawa and a reading of the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon by Rex Masuaku.

The program included interfaith prayers from representatives of Islam, Christianity, and Unificationism. Candles were lit for One Minute of Silence, after which a song was sung by all the participants in deep hope and prayer that one day people all over the world will live in peace and harmony as one family under God.

Joachim Kuman read the UPF statement on the International Day of Peace, and Geoffrey Henry conducted a quiz about peace. After the final song, "Heal the World," and a closing prayer by Chris Bokabule, a photo was taken and a meal served.
