Day of Peace Observed in Taipei

Taipei, Taiwan - UPF-Taiwan commemorated the International Day of Peace on September 18 with a seminar on the proposal for an interreligious council at the United Nations co-organized with the Professors World Peace Academy, ROC. The seminar began with a short addressed by the founding President of UPF-Taiwan, Dr. King-yuh Chang, and the President of the Professors World Peace Academy, Prof. Tan-Hei Chou, served as the moderator. There were three speakers, scholars of high academic achievement and people with extensive expertise in international affairs.
The first speaker, Prof. Li, Tsai-fang, was the former Representative of the Republic of China to Korea. He said that he admires Rev. Sun Myung Moon as a person who puts words into action and has invested his utmost effort for peace. In addition, having lived in Korea and seen the development of Korea over the last 20 years, he believes that Taiwan can emulate the efforts Korea has made and that both countries could cooperate and join efforts with the United States to promote stability in the Pacific Rim communities.
The second speaker, Prof. Lu, Ya-Li, a well-known senior political scientist, pointed out some difficulties in establishing a new body such as an interreligious peace council. He believes that the proposal merits required intensive study and compiling insights from experts. However, he added that changes in the world are always unpredictable, such as a black man being elected President of the United States, the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The last speaker, Dr. Teng, Chung-chien, Professor of Diplomacy and Dean of the College of International Affairs of National Chengchi University, talked about how new emerging economies, non-traditional security issues, and international NGOs have impacted international relations after the Cold War. Analyzing international relations based on social constructionist theories has become popular, and people are recognizing the need for not only "peacekeeping" but also "peacebuilding." Therefore, he considers the proposal for an Interreligious Peace Council at the UN an insightful global vision.
A lot of questions were raised with good response from the speakers during the Plenary section. There were 122 participants for this seminar.
