Day of Peace Observed in Japan

Kanagawa, Japan - In commemoration of the UN International Day of Peace, a cleanup project organized by UPF-Japan and YFWP-Japan (Youth Federation for World Peace) in cooperation with the Kanagawa Coastal Environmental Foundation was held at Wada-Nahama beach on the Miura Peninsula of Kanagawa Prefecture on September 15. This was the seventh year of environmental projects.

YFWP-Japan is promoting several cleanup projects (including a dry riverbed in Arakawa, northern Tokyo) with the local governments and residents to make the city a more pleasant place to live and promote the sound nurturing of young people under the slogan, "Clean Education." Thus the theme of this year’s International Day of Peace, "Education for Peace," was especially appropriate.

Prior to the activity, Mr. Kazunori Arase, Director of Publications of UPF-Japan, conveyed the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for this UN day and briefed participants about the significance of the day. Then, he mentioned that Tokyo was successful in its bid to host the Olympic Games of 2020, and said, "More foreign visitors will be coming to Tokyo for 2020, and Tokyo will catch the world’s attention. Your participation in not only this cleanup project to improve the environment at the beach but also all your volunteer activities will make a significant impact on a welcoming environment foreign visitors including the Olympic athletes."

Heavy rains that day made it impossible to clean the beach. Instead, the young volunteers cleaned up a public restroom near the beach. Because this restroom is usually taken care of by local governments and organizations, it became dirty after the close of the bathing season. The youth swept out the sand and garbage that had piled up on floor, cleaned a sink, and scrubbed the floor with detergent.
