Colombo, Sri Lanka—UPF together with the UN Information Centre and local government in Sri Lanka celebrated the International Day of Peace 2016 in the country with a program and a peace march. The event took place on September 21, 2016 in the Colombo suburb of Ja-ela.
Several speakers were invited from the local government, NGOs and the UN. The chief guest was Dr. Chung Sik Yong, chair of UPF-Asia, who was represented by Dr. Edgar T. Tanate, education director of UPF-South Asia. Dr. Tanate delivered Dr. Yong’s message, which was translated into the local language by Dr. Chula Senarathne, secretary general of UPF-Sri Lanka.
The main program was followed by the releasing of peace doves and a peace march. A total of 300 people attended the program and walked the march, carrying banners promoting peace, communication and unity among people beyond race, religion and social class.
