International Day of Peace Observed in Moscow

Moscow, Russia—The Moscow branch of UPF held a meeting at its Peace Embassy to commemorate the 2018 UN International Day of Peace.
The master of ceremonies of the September 21 event, UPF-Moscow Secretary General Dmitry Samko, drew attention to the theme of the 2018 Peace Day, "The Right to Peace: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70." He read a quote from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres: "The time has come for all peoples to live by the principles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year marks the 70th anniversary of this historic document."
Continuing on this high note, Sergei Dvorianov, president of Amicability, an international diplomatic club, connected the humanitarian mission of Peace Day and the church holiday known as the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which Orthodox followers also celebrated this year on September 21. According to Mr. Dvorianov, Russia now has a special vertical peacekeeping mission entrusted to it, and he called on the members of the audience to take even more responsibility, moving from words to real deeds.
Professor Sergey Afanasyev, the president of the State Fund for the Development of the North-West Region, talked about promising projects and cooperation in the field of people's diplomacy and his experience in the UN and UNESCO system. His message was very consonant with that of Engel Tagirov from the city of Kazan, where he heads the UNESCO Institute for Peace Culture. Both speakers touched upon the global crises that the nuclear powers are now experiencing, as well as the relevance of dialogue, which is now particularly needed.
A bright addition was the performance of the Russian showman and civil activist Lucky Lee, who promotes the ideas of peace through culture and vivid performances. He introduced himself as "PeaceMan" (man of peace) and called on all to support a big project, # vote4peace (vote for peace).
Konstantin Krylov, the UPF regional vice president for Eurasia, spoke about the huge volume of the federation's work done this year. He described international and Russian projects aimed at bringing people together and erasing barriers between countries.
At the end of the program, a guest from Ireland, Jack Corley, who worked for many years in Russia in the field of moral education, recalled his experience of working in different countries. In many countries there is now a major crisis of values, he said, and the way to resolve such a crisis lies, first of all, in the education and upbringing of the younger generation.
This bright event concluded with the signing of an agreement on cooperation between the Universal Peace Federation and the Institute for Peace Culture.
