Uruguay—On September 21, UPF-Uruguay commemorated UN International Day of Peace 2020 with the theme proposed by the United Nations for this year, “Shaping Peace Together.” The national subtheme was “Four Women, Four Glances, Four Paths in the Search for Social Peace.” The moderator of the webinar event was Prof. Raúl Rey Banegas, president of UPF-Uruguay.
The opening words were in the charge of Mrs. Graciela Rompani de Pacheco, widow of the former president of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay (1967–1972), founder and president of Ventura Grameen Uruguay and executive director of the Montevideo Biennial. She emphasized the importance of social and religious dialogue to strengthen peace in the community, and she also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have participated in the World Assembly in Seoul, Korea, in February 2020.
Gabriela Viale, member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and representative of Uruguay’s Table for Interreligious Dialogue and Spiritual Expressions, spoke on the theme “Peace Coming From Faith and Religious Dialogue.”
National Representative Laura Tassano spoke on the topic “Political Participation and Social Dialogue: Deepening Democracy and the Construction of National and Regional Peace.”
Dr. Susana Mangana, professor at the Catholic University of Uruguay and director of the Permanent Chair of Islam and the Arab World of the Institute of Society and Religion in the Department of Humanities, spoke on “International Academic Perspective, Pitfalls And Difficulties That We Have Tto Overcome: The Responsibility of Education to Build a Culture of Peace.”
