UPF-UK Observes International Day of Peace

United Kingdom-2022-09-27-UPF-UK Observes International Day of Peace

London, United Kingdom—Ambassadors for Peace and UPF friends commemorated the UN International Day of Peace together.

A diverse group of people attended the September 27, 2022, meeting, both in person at UPF’s offices and online. It was livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube as well as on Zoom.

Robin Marsh, the secretary general of UPF-UK, welcomed the audience. His co-host was UPF-UK Director Margaret Ali.

The program began with two invocations: a rendition of a nasheed from Mohammed Aslam and a Hindu chant for peace from Pupendra Suntu, a Hindu priest.

Following this, Ian Pelham Turner, a royal photographer, broadcaster and commentator, offered his insights on the life of our late Queen Elizabeth II, as well as his experience in the media over many years relating to the Royal Family. He said that he was watched by 4.2 billion people across the world over the ten days of mourning.

A leading figure of the Muslim community, Sheikh Dr. Hojjat Ramzi, explained that the fruit of justice was peace. He spoke of his passion for human rights issues, such as the persecution of the Rohingya and the Uighurs. He revealed his awareness of the misery of much of the world's population from which we in the UK are isolated during our day-to-day life.

Lt. Gen. Abdul Qayyum, a retired three-star general and a former senator and government minister from Pakistan’s Punjab region, spoke after a late invitation by Mlad Khokhar MBE and Shazada Hayat. He was presented with an Ambassador for Peace award for his distinguished career of public service. He was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Mr. Khokhar MBE representing Muslim Aid.

There were a number of short speeches and comments following from those in the audience. Merita Isufi, Caroline Heward, Aurangzeb Akhbar spoke from the audience, while Dr. HC Nikki De Pina from “Global Peace Let's Talk” commented via Zoom. Ahmed Shebani introduced a famous Syrian filmmaker, Anwar Kawadri, whose film of the late Jamal Abdulnasser is renowned throughout the Arab world. Mr. Shebani also introduced Saudi singer Latifa Idrissi, who sang one song.

In addition to Lt. Gen. Abdul Qayyum, Shahid Pansota Mushtaq, Julliet Makhakpila, and Alex Ward also were awarded Ambassador for Peace certificates.
