Lima, Peru—UN International Women’s Day is always welcomed in Peru as a day of celebration. Events are planned by everyone—from the National Congress, Peru’s legislature, to the Mothers Clubs —where people from different areas of society speak, prizes are awarded, lively dances are performed and music fills the air.
UPF-Peru also holds its own event. This year, it co-organized a program with the Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) of Peru and the University of Lawyers of Lima, a historical institution established in 1804.
The event, which took place on the evening of March 9, 2017, opened with remarks, given by Mrs. Maria Elena Rivero, president of the Association of Broadcasters, who served as the emcee.
The UN Secretary General’s message for the Day was read, and speeches were given by Dr. Trevor Jones, president of UPF-Peru; Dr. Pedro Angulo, dean of the University of Lawyers; and representatives of other institutions, all of whom gave their support to the theme of the day, which this year was, “Women in Changing the World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030.”
The musical performances inspired the audience of 400 people.
Twelve new Ambassadors for Peace were appointed, including former congresswomen and city leaders.
