Montreal, Canada—On a sunny, chilly Saturday morning, UPF’s 2020 Peace Road Canada project got under way with the support of local Member of Parliament Emmanuella Lambropoulos, Borough Mayor Alan DeSousa, and Councilors Francesco Miele and Aref Salem.
The crowd of 30–40 participants gathered at the Monument to Peace at the center of the city’s “Peace Park” to also celebrate the 39th anniversary of the UN International Day of Peace, instituted by the United Nations in 1981. UPF-Canada Secretary-General Robert Duffy reminded the group that in the same year, 1981, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and his wife, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, introduced the International Peace Highway project at the 10th International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences in Seoul, Korea.
This Peace Highway project has been steadily gaining popularity through the efforts of people all over the world who, every year since 2015, have been staging Peace Road rallies of bike riders, drivers, and walkers who traverse a section of road or bike path in their local area to publicize the project.
Our rally took the cyclists on a 15-kilometer journey (30 kilometers round trip) from the Borough of St-Laurent along Montreal’s scenic north side to the Borough of Montréal-Nord, where UPF Québec Coordinator Isabelle Laurin and local civic leaders were waiting to receive them.
The rally concluded with short remarks from the president of UPF Canada, Dr. Franco Famularo; representative of the mayor of Montréal-Nord, Alain-David Jean-Noël; and City Councilor Abdélaq Sari, all of whom praised the event as an important activity for peace.
Because of the coronavirus, the crowd was thinner than expected, but thanks to that fact we observed safety regulations, everyone was kept safe. The support of the UPF-Montreal members young and older made the event one of both collaboration and charm.
