Interfaith Programs

UPF organizes programs that help build understanding, respect and cooperation among people of different faiths.

Berlin, Germany - Over 70 Ambassadors for Peace, guests and members of the UPF Peace Council gathered in Berlin-Lichterfelde March 14-16, 2008, to discuss ”On the way to a peaceful society.”

UPF's February interfaith meeting on the 20th was one of the best so far, with 24 guests including two priests from the Traditional Catholic Church (not affiliated with Rome) and the pastor of a major Anglican church downtown.

The fifth annual Interfaith Breakfast at Montreal City Hall honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Jan. 21, 2008 was opened with prayers offered by various faith leaders.

An International Conference on Interfaith Dialogue towards Global Peace at the Peace Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, unanimously passed a resolution entitled "Brussels Peace Declaration on Religious Coexistence" on December 1, 2007. Participants discussed the importance of interfaith harmony and conflict resolution to combat extremism, intolerance, hatred, and violence in the name of religion.

An International Conference on Interfaith Dialogue towards Global Peace at the Peace Embassy in Brussels, Belgium, unanimously passed a resolution entitled "Brussels Peace Declaration on Religious Coexistence" on December 1, 2007.

Participants discussed the importance of interfaith harmony and conflict resolution to combat extremism, intolerance, hatred, and violence in the name of religion.

The conference was organized by the Universal Peace Federation-Belgium and the Institute of Peace and Development, a European think tank. Both organizations affirmed that they will work together to promote and preserve peace, justice, human rights, equality, genuine brotherhood, and tolerance. Cultivating friendly interactions among people of diverse cultures and religions will help create an environment conducive to building peace and harmony among communities and peoples.

Prominent Pakistani intellectual, Major General (retired) Muhammad Tahir, Director of Welfare Education for the Fauji Foundation of Pakistan, was the keynote speaker and received the Institute of Peace and Development's Peace Award 2007 and a UPF appointment as an Ambassador for Peace. He said that all religions promote a message of peace, harmony, love, and compassion.

He described the basic principles and moral values that govern Islamic nations' dealings with other nations. He said that justice is the inalienable right of all people and that oppressing other people is forbidden, irrespective of their religion, color, or ethnicity.

An International Leadership Conference in Tiberias, Israel, Oct. 29-31, 2007, brought together Druze, Jews, Muslims and Christians.

In his Inaugural Address before a standing-room-only crowd at The Goa International Centre, on April 23, the Governor of Goa, Shri S.C. Jamir, emphasized that it was "the duty of every nation and its people to cooperate, support, and strengthen ... to the maximum extent possible" the efforts to create an interreligious council at the United Nations.
