Argentina—“Environment and Sustainability: Proposals and Challenges for the Day After” was the theme of the November IAPP-Argentina panel. The subject, namely, "Environment and Sustainability, is one of IAPP-Argentina’s five-part Lines of Action Series (1). The Zoom webinar took place on November 16, 2020, with 137 registered and 76 online connections.
Panelists were Parliamentarians María Paula Lopardo, Osvaldo Mercuri, María Fernanda Reyes, and Rosío Antinori. Moderator was Humberto Benedetto, Mercosur Parliamentarian representing the Province of Córdoba. Representing civil society, Nancy García Molina made a contribution. Details follow below.
In the current COVID-19 context, with issues that can worsen, panelists addressed “Environment and Sustainability,” one of IAPP-Argentina’s lines of action. Its objective is to “face climate change, environmental pollution and global warming, including the development of alternative, sustainable energies. To uphold life as a basic principle and to bolster an integral ecology of peaceful coexistence, mutual prosperity and universally shared values.”
After the presentations, we listened to the audience’s questions and concerns. Patricia Pitaluga delivered the questions from the audience to the panelists. The general moderation was in the charge of Emanuel Sayavedra, member of UPF-Argentina’s Governing Board; technical coordination was in the charge of Juan Olivari, from the HJ Media Team; and general coordination was in the charge of Miguel Werner, UPF-Argentina’s secretary general.

IAPP Argentina
The International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) seeks to unify knowledge, experience and good practices from legislators and other fields to face the critical challenges of humanity and the planet: poverty and corruption, violence and extremism, pollution and climate change, educational crisis and family breakdown, ethnical and religious conflicts, the threat of “new wars,” the world refugee crisis, territorial disputes, and so forth.
The “Parliamentarians for Peace” initiative began in 2001 through Ambassadors for Peace seeking to empower a type of leadership that provides dialogue and cooperation for a sustainable development from a peace perspective. Such vision was reaffirmed in 2005, in the tour when UPF was established in 120 countries by its founders. Since then, various peace projects and programs were developed. Aligned with this proposal, the IAPP was globally launched in Korea in February 2016. The IAPP was regionally launched on October 11, 2016, at Paraguay’s National Congress.
In Argentina, the IAPP was launched on November 30, 2017, at the National Senate, where five lines of action were established in its inaugural declaration: Education and Values, Dignity and Human Rights, Governance and Transparency, Development and Cooperation, and Environment and Sustainability. These are aligned with UPF’s premises of interdependence, mutual prosperity and universal values.
