Dialogue & Alliance

New York, USA—This issue of Dialogue and Alliance represents the third and final set of articles that derive from UPF’s World Summit 2022 that took place in February 2022, addressing the theme of “Toward Peace on the Korean Peninsula.” Over the past twelve months the situation on the peninsula has continued to remain tense. Not only do we observe the ongoing threat posed by the DPRK, but also a broader geopolitical crisis related to the war in Ukraine. In this era of a “new Cold War,” East Asia, and particularly the East and South China Seas, are emerging as a center of global concern. In addition to the Korean peninsula, many fear that the worst could happen in Taiwan.

The Universal Peace Federation, through its World Summit series, remains fully committed to promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the world, guided by principles interdependence, mutual prosperity and universal values.  This conference series brings together world leaders and experts from a wide diversity of cultural, political, religious and ethnic backgrounds, providing a forum that allows for constructive dialogue aimed at finding solutions to critical global problems.

The UPF has developed a world-class multi-sectoral approch to peace, drawing on the strength of its various associations that engage with current and former heads of state and government, parliamentarians, religious leaders, business leaders, academicians, media, professors and artists.

In this volume one finds contributions from leaders as diverse in their political perspectives and cultural backgrounds as H.E. Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia; H.E. Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary General of the United Nations; H.E. Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria; H.E. Donald Trump, former President of the United States; and H.E. Dr. Jose Manuel Barroso, former Prime Minister of Portugal and former President of the European Commission. H.E. Barroso also serves as Chairman of the Sunhak Peace Prize Selection Committee.

In addition, we are pleased to include articles from former heads of state, parliamentarians, and religious leaders from twenty African countries, bringing unique and much-needed perspective to our world’s critical global problems. We live in an interconnected and interdependent world, making it all the more essential that all global stakeholders are engaged in the deliberations that seek solutions for the sake of humanity and future generations. UPF is proud of its strong partnership with African leaders representing all sectors.

As we go to press, UPF is preparing for both a World Summit to be convened again in Korea on May 2-6 2023, centering on the theme of “Contemporary Challenges to Global Order: Toward a World Culture of Peace.” In addition, an African Summit will also be convened later this year, highlighting Africa’s increasing significance for global affairs, and an essential global partner in the search for solutions to our shared challenges. In a multi-polar world, and with its growing population, engagement with Africa is imperative. We believe the articles in this issue will underscore that point.
