Religious Youth Service

UPF chapters organize Religious Youth Service projects that offer service-learning opportunities with a special focus on developing personal leadership and peacemaking skills. Through living together and providing altruistic service in a community, participants demonstrate that it is possible for our global human family to come together in peace for our mutual well being.

Atlanta, United States— Working with Summerhill Community Development participants, joined their ongoing programs by painting rooms in private houses, gardening, and helping with basic carpentry.

Varasdin, Croatia— Participants helped restore a classroom, numerous refugee's apartments, painted a large dinning room and several hallways, fixed public toilets, and worked on local grounds upkeep.

Chittagong/Aburkhil, Bangladesh— Participants carried 3000 bricks to a school and begin constructing a paved road (Amity Road) to the school.

Bangkok, Thailand— The work of RYS was slowed down in Thailand on account of government persecution in 1992-3. This project in the North of Thailand was designed to rebuild the RYS and IRFF foundation while providing needed services for the region.

Madurai, India— The participants worked on the construction of a new wing at a boarding school for Harijan children and help work on landscaping the area so it is safer for the children to play.

Republic of Turkey— Participants worked digging a foundation, building walls, landscaping the area and providing indoor construction and restoration for a school in Ankara. RYS provided a variety of service in Canakale under the guidance of the municipal office. One project included creating and improving the grounds for an outdoor Cultural center.

Atlanta, United States— In cooperation with the Summerhill Community Development Organization RYS volunteers worked at a housing project.

Bangalore, India— The small and enthusiastic group of RYS volunteers cleared grounds and worked on light restoration at a school for Spastic Children.

Madurai, South India— The RYS Peace Festival was a unique event for the RYS as it was a week full of local and community based events which involved the schools of the community in a variety of activities.

Aphalit, Philippines— RYS volunteer teams worked on the construction of part of a local hospital.

Sungal Batu/ Teluk Kumbar, Malaysia— The participants demolished an old community hall and laid the foundation for a new community center for the fishing community and painted and refurnished another community center. The project was in part a response to needs of the Ministry of the Fisheries.

New Delhi, India—The RYS Global Congress (RYSGF) centered on ten unique week long seminars. The ten workshops were led by the most experienced and qualified advisors and graduates from the RYS and its sister project, The Youth Seminar for the World Religion's (YSWR).
