UN World Interfaith Harmony Week

A World Interfaith Harmony Week observance took place February 7, 2012 in the UN General Assembly Hall on the theme "Common Ground for the Common Good." The President of the 66th Session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, said in announcing the event: "In our conflict-ridden world, I believe it is important to recognize the historical good done by people of all faiths in many of the areas of the work of the United Nations as well as the current successful partnerships in various parts of the world between UN agencies and religious groups particularly in meeting the humanitarian needs of disaster-stricken people." Bratislava, Slovakia - UPF Slovakia inspired an interreligious event on February 10 in the chapel of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church in Bratislava.

 Budapest, Hungary - An interreligious service was held on February 5 and a prayer breakfast on February 7 as part of UN World Interfaith Harmony Week in Budapest.

Sao Paulo, Brazil - UPF-Brazil organized an interfaith dialogue and celebration at the City Hall of Sao Paulo on February 9. On February 14, an interfaith meeting took place in the Paulo Kobayashi Auditorium of the Sao Paulo State Congress.

New Delhi, India - UPF-India in collaboration with the National Service Scheme of the Atma Ram Santan Dharma College of the University of Delhi observed the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week on February 3 by organizing an Inter-Collegiate Debate Competition on the theme of “The Need of Interfaith Harmony for Peace in the 21st Century.”

Salt Lake City, USA - The Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable’s annual Interfaith Month officially began on February 2 with an invitation-only prayer breakfast at the Salt Lake Marriot Downtown Hotel. The Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable has celebrated February as Interfaith Month since 2002 because the members of the 22 different religious groups who served as chaplains during the 2002 Winter Olympics wanted to continue meeting as they knew they had an important statement to make and wanted to highlight the diversity of faiths in Utah.

Seoul, Korea - A commemoration of World Interfaith Harmony Week took place at the Cheon Bok Gung interfaith sanctuary in Seoul on January 22 as part of UPF's International Leadership Conference.

Bangkok, Thailand - UPF-Thailand joined hands with other religious organizations to organize a World Interfaith Harmony Week program at its Peace Embassy in Bangkok on February 7. The 300 people in attendance included Buddhist monks, religious leaders, civil society leaders, NGO representatives, military and government representatives, Ambassadors for Peace, and youth leaders.

Oujda, Morocco - Youth for Peace invited many religious and spiritual leaders to a meeting at the Moulay Slimane Fondation to celebrate the second World Interfaith Harmony Week. We celebrated by gathering together and  strengthening our ties, sharing news of our interfaith activities and our future plans; it was an occasion for meeting new friends and creating new partnerships.
