Character Education

Cultivating good character is an important part of a child's education at home, at school and in the community. Many UPF chapters offer lessons in classrooms or train teachers and administrators in character education or peace education.

St. Petersburg, Russia - A scientific and practical conference on the topic of “Moral and ethical character education in the 21st century: Efforts towards a new stage of development” took place in St. Petersburg on November 7.

Papeete, Tahiti - Leaders of French Polynesia gathered at the town hall of Papeete for a two-day UPF character education seminar that addressed pressing social issues in the Pacific islands.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - UPF-Asia  conducted the second Character Education Teachers Training Workshop co-organized by the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences (VNIES) and Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Education August 28-29, 2009. Sixty school principals and elementary school teachers participated in a character education teacher-training program in preparation for the translation of the books and a one-year pilot program to be run by the VNIES.

Trinidad and Tobago - UPF peer educators offered character education programs to children in the village of El Luengo and young athletes in Port of Spain, the capital. This was the second year that the Universal Peace Federation sent interns from the US to this Caribbean island.

Jamaica - Two summer camps for children in depressed areas of Jamaica featured life skills training, sports, and character education. The first camp was at the Half Way Tree Primary School and the second at the Braeton Primary and Junior High School.

Pohnpei, Micronesia – Twenty one elementary school teachers participated in a character education teacher-training program in preparation for a new one-year  pilot program scheduled for the Pacific island nation. The seminar was sponsored by Ministry of Education in partnership with UPF Micronesia.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - A one-day character education seminar took place at the Nefas Silk TVET College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on April 8 for students from different departments and specializations, based on their high performance and grades in the Civic and Ethical Education course.
